It has been a busy start to the year for our partners at B Young Stars, who deliver our educational tutoring programme for young people. We took a visit to one of their sessions at Avery Hill and discussed with members how the sessions are benefiting them.
This session emphasised English language development through the study of various poetry techniques and engaging writing activities. As part of this programme young people also took part in recreational activities such as football in the sports hall, drawing, and activities on gaming consoles.
We spoke to two young people who have been attending the sessions, and this is what they had to say.
I come here every week, and I have changed so much since coming here. I eat food, I play sports, and I learn a lot! -Maxium
I love how I can come here and chill but also do so much work. I have improved a lot in my handwriting and English.- Noriah
We look forward to seeing how the tutoring sessions will benefit the young people's educational development. To find out more about how to access this service, please click here.
B Young Stars have also been working with Ukraine members and their families. They have been supporting the families with their children's education, by helping them adjust to the UK school curriculum as well as learning the English language. This has been a very successful programme and we are proud that we can support families across the borough. A party was held with the Ukraine support group towards the end of last year to celebrate the festive period and provide a space for families to enjoy themselves. This included food, dancing and activities. This event was also attended by Cllr. Leo Fletcher Mayor of Royal Greenwich and MP Matthew Pennycook who got to speak to families about their experiences. During a session the group also had toys and gifts donated to them by our Head of Youth Service, Jeanette Harrison.
